The comic book code was revised in 1989, to make sexual orientation something that comics were to handle as they did diversity of race, religion, class, disability, etc. Before that LGBT characters in mainstream comics were coded or involved temporary gender changes. 2. Before the 1990s Cartoon films and tv shows sometimes had effemiante and cross dressing villians. I guess the censors didnt mind suggesting that a villian was "that way." Cartoon and live action shows from Disney and Nick (since 1990s) have had main or "good guy" characters who are identifed as being "that way", but only through subtext, and you have to watch the show often to notice it (meaning you grew up with it, or got younger siblings/nieces who watch it alot).
